Varna: A holiday guide to Bulgaria

Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea and is the third biggest city in Bulgaria. Known locally as the ‘Queen of the Black Sea’, the city’s Roman structure resembles an amphitheatre as it follows the grooves of the Bay of Varna.

The ancient Roman city has a Mediterranean style, with tree-lined boulevards giving way to medieval streets full of cafés and restaurants. Top attractions include the Sea Garden on the shore front, the Cathedral of the Assumption (Bulgaria’s second largest church) and the Archaeological Museum, which hosts fascinating relics from the Stone Age, Thracian, Classical and Mediaeval periods.

Varna’s Golden Sands

Golden Sands is one of Bulgaria’s largest beaches on the Black Sea, and it’s easy to see why travellers loving coming here. The beach offers warm sand, turquoise water and a beachfront promenade packed full of vibrant bars and shops. Situated in northern Bulgaria, the resort enjoys a warm year-round climate, which rarely disappoints from March to October.

Nessebar – a daytrip from Varna

Nessebar is a one of the cultural gems of the Black Sea. Connected by quaint cobbled lanes, the tiny peninsula is only 60 miles from Varna. The Balkan beauty spot is a spectacular place to visit with over 3,000 years of history.

Visitors can explore 44 churches, Roman ruins, classic Bulgarian homes and an Archaeological Museum. It’s no wonder UNESCO made this rhombus shaped town a World Heritage Site. Offering beautiful views of the Black Sea, this is a must-see destination for Balkan travellers.
