Paraty is a charming city 3 hours away from Rio de Janeiro (by the way, do you know what to visit? This article can help. Located between the mountains and the sea, it offers great attractions… so if you’re spending some time in Rio, take a day or two to city this historic city.
1 – Historical heritage
The historic center of Paraty is considered by UNESCO as “the most harmonious colonial architectural set of Brazil”. In its streets made of stones, there are no cars circulating, only people and chariots which make will make you go back in time! In its ancient but preserved houses there are hostels, art galleries, bares and restaurants. Impossible not to admire the nostalgic atmosphere of the place.
2 – Alembics
Paraty is also known by its alembics, the place where hand made “cachaça” is made! “Cachaça” is one of the main ingredients of the famous “Caipirinhas” – Brazilian’s national cocktail! The alembics Pedra Branca, Engenho do Ouro and Coqueiro are some where it is possible to watch the whole process of production of this drink – and it includes a tasting in the end! Besides, in the gift shops of these factories there are available traditional hand made sweets and cheeses which are truly delicious!
3 – Waterfalls
Across the mountains of Mata Atlântica there are hidden waterfalls, very appreciated for swimming in the summer. They are beautiful natural pools with waterfalls to relax and enjoy the views of the nature. Among the most known waterfalls are: Poço dos Ingleses, Pedra Branca, Poço do Tarzan and Tobogã where you can even enjoy a natural slide.
4 – The beaches
There are about 60 beaches in the coast of Paraty, most of them with calm and warm water. From the most modern to the most wild, there are beaches for all tastes. Among the most famous are Pontal Beach, ideal for water sport lovers, such as kayak or stand up paddle. Lula and Vermelha are also beautiful beaches, accessible only by boat, therefore you can’t miss a ride on board the famous schooners. A bit farther is the beach of Trindade, the most beautiful of the region. Impossible not to visit the beaches of Ranchos, Meio and the natural pool Cachadaço, where you can dive and swim between colorful fishes.
5 – Food and night life
Nightlife is Paraty is pretty intense: bars, restaurants and clubs. And there for all tastes and wallets. Restaurants that offer typical Brazilian dishes to international food restaurants. Some bars of the historical center tables and chairs outside so you can enjoy the hot nights and others have live music. During the year there are events that make of the city even more special, such as the Literature International Fair of Paraty and the Festival of Cachaça.
